All-time Best Oscar Fashion
This Sunday the crème de la crème of Awards shows are taking place. The big one. What everyone’s been waiting for. The Don of awards shows you might say. That’s right – it’s Oscar time. Now as much as we’re interested in who wins what, lets face it, its all about the dresses this Sunday. Who wears who. Who gets it right and who gets it very, very wrong (we all know that its inevitable that one A-Lister will pull a stinker out the bag).
In celebration of the 84th Academy Awards this weekend, we look back to our all-time favourite red carpet looks and what we can learn from these stylish women.
First up it’s the ultimate style icon herself; Audrey Hepburn. Pictured here way back in 1954 after winning her Best Actress Oscar for Roman Holiday, she is the picture of ladylike elegance in a Givenchy lace shift dress teamed with her signature gamine crop.So what we can learn from the beautiful Audrey? Keep things simple. The Academy Awards red carpet is not about flounce, frill or frou frou. Well almost always….
Which brings us on to 2009 when Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out in this Dior Haute Couture dress. When looking at this mint green creation, the word ‘frou frou’ certainly comes to mind. As does ‘Princess’, ‘Over-the-top’ and ‘frothy’. But somehow it all kinda works. A Disney Princess look on the red carpet is never usually a good thing, but if your going to do it, do it the SJP way. Although we think that no one could quite pull it off like SJP, so a word of warning to other A-Listers - don’t bother.
Next up, we have J-Lo from 2001. And yes, that is correct, back then she was still known as J-Lo and hadn’t reverted back to the original, boring Jennifer Lopez. We have to say, when looking back at Miss Lopez’s Oscar wardrobe, shes pulled out some real winners over the years. She always embraces the formality of the occasion leaving her blingtastic side at home thus succeeding in getting it right 90% of the time and this is our favourite. Here she gives us a masterclass in doing sheer on the red carpet. If you going to do it , do it in Chanel. Chanel can never be excused of being tacky, cheap or crude. It’s pure fashion darling. And J-Lo knows it.
Ah Miss Winslet. We can always rely on Kate to fly the flag for Britain on both the red carpet and the nominations. We still think about this Ben de Lisi dress from2002 when thinking about Oscar Fashion triumphs. Simple yet still making a statement, it is the perfect example of how to do work a solid block of colour. Her curves, chic up-do and minimal make-up all help in making it a winning look. We love.
In 2006 not only did Michelle Williams demonstrate how to work colour on the red carpet like our Kate, she proved that you can do something different and be ‘fashion’ with out being try-hard or wacky. This divine canary-yellow Vera Wang dress was deemed by many as the winning-look of that night, and we have to agree. Mainstream trends don’t often make an appearance on the red carpet but Michelle pulled off this trendy hue to perfection. It was the bold red lip though that really transformed this look to another level. Nude or pink wouldn’t have worked. It indicated she knew her fashion and wasn’t afraid to stand out from the crowd. We cant wait to see what she chooses this Sunday.
Charlize Theron wearing Dior in 2009. Showing that a beautiful face, rocking body and simple dress always works. Enough said.
Vintage has become a much-loved trend for A-Listers wanting to stand out on the red carpet. Ever since Julia Roberts wore vintage Valentino when she won the Best Actress gong in 2001, more and more attendees have opted to go vintage. A great example of this is from Reese Witherspoon in 2006, who wore these beautiful, beaded gown by Dior. Perfect for her petite frame and she looked elegant, radiant and totally Oscar worthy.
Coming up on Monday – our verdict on who wore it well on this years big night!
Welcome to Heaven
This season is causing us some serious problems. Coming into work every single day is causing us to lust after the amazing shoes and accessories that are currently sitting in our accessories room in the most inappropriate way. Hearts are pounding. Temperatures are rising. We’ve never felt this way before. Lust is slowly turning into love and we can’t eat, sleep or even think until we have given into our feelings. But what to do? Do we go for the utterly gorgeous Stella McCartney Snakeskin Falabella bag or opt for the most glorious, smile-inducing, sparkly shoes we’ve ever seen from Givenchy? Love is tough huh?
What will you give your heart to this season?

Brits Best Dressed
Awards season continues and last night at the O2 Arena it was all about the music. Adele continued her winning streak after sweeping the boards at the Grammys by picking up two awards and Bernard’s current crush du jour Emile Sande scooped the Critics Choice Award.
The Brit awards is always an opportunity for the attendees to show off their cool credentials as glamour and glitz certainly isn’t the priority here. We particularly loved Fearne Cotton and Caroline Flack’s laid back yet cute looks accompanied by a pair of killer legs.
Holly Willoughby, Lisa Snowdon and Abbey Clancy all kept things simple and opted for dresses with Holly showcasing the power of the Little Black Dress. Love that she knows what works for her and sticks with it.
Some ladies did go traditional though, with Jo Wiley, Adele and Pixie Lott all sporting full-length black numbers. Jo & Adele went for the best of British wearing Stella McCartney and Burberry respectively.
Jessie J went for a rather revealing red lacy dress whereas winner of Best International Newcomer Lana del Ray looked elegant in her Vivienne Westwood dress of the same hue. As ever, Rihanna stirred up a a storm in her Givenchy dress that featured both a deep v at the front and a thigh-high split.
And we couldn’t not mention the stunning Florence Welch who wore not one but two killer dresses for the event. Keeping both looks pale yet interesting they succeed in showing of her flame-red hair and porcelain skin perfectly and were just on the right side of dramatic. That girl can do no wrong!
LFW: Acne
8pm on a Sunday evening after a weekend of non-stop working may initially seem like a bad time to hold a fashion show. But Acne are not an ordinary label, and everyone makes sure they stick around for this show. The Swedish brand is renowned for being the go-to brand for fashion insiders when they need a effortless yet cool look. Their Pistol boots have sold out so many times we cant re-order them fast enough and it is always the collection that every member of staff wants when it arrives in-store. So whats in store for next season. We headed down to an old sorting office on New Oxford Street to find out.
As always with Acne, there were some fantastic colour combinations throughout the show. Tangerine sat with burgundy, acid green was paired with pale dove blue and mustard was back again.
There was a wide variety of textures with leather featuring heavily on coats, trousers and dresses. Jonny Johansson and co experimented with stiff fabrics all nipped in at the waist with wide waist belts to create a exaggerated, structured silhouette.
There were touches of military influences throughout with subtle military detailing. Camouflage inspired prints were seen on dresses and coats.
The venue was fantastic, really accentuating the fantastic colours of the show.
LFW: Jean-Pierre Braganza
We were very excited to see what Jean-Pierre Branganza would be offering up for next season and the collection was a wonderful mix of vibrant colour, sharp tailoring and easy luxe.
Purple was the key colour, with it appearing on printed shift dresses, relaxed low slung trousers, gently draped dresses and fitted asymmetric jackets.
Prints also played an important with stripes, florals and digital all present. We loved the explosion of vibrant orange and purple hues on dramatic evening dresses.
LFW: Felder Felder
London Fashion Week has officially kicked off! Between buying appointments and trying to get some sleep we will be bringing you the latest from the shows of the brands we love here at Bernard Boutique. To start things off we went to Felder Felder. A brand we’ve never stocked before but we loved the show so watch this space!
Th show featured lots of flashes of metallic including rose gold skater skirts and gold and silver platform boots.
Cute mini skater skirts seemed to be a key shape and digital prints adorned everything from leggings, t-shirts and dresses in vibrant oranges, purples and red.
We loved the naturally tousled hair and minimal make-up of the show.

Anyone who has done the circus that is Fashion Week and survived will know that there are a few must-have essentials to get you through it. It’s not only the killer outfits that you need to think about. We asked our buyer Nikki what she will be relying on as London Fashion Week kicks off.

Not something we usual obsess over, but these red leather leggings from Dom & Ruby are particularly swoon-worthy. Exclusively available at Bernard Boutique in this colour-way, they are surprisingly more verstaile and flattering than you may think. Here are some of the ways we’ll be wearing them this season.

Adele Wows at the Grammys
Last night saw the triumphant return of Adele to the stage after her throat surgery and not only did she receive a standing ovation after her performance of ’Rolling in the Deep’, the swept the board by winning five awards from the notoriously tough-to-please US music industry. She also showcased a new blonder hairdo and two killer outfits for the night. Sticking with her much loved black, she opted for a more figure-hugging look than normal and we loved it. With perfect make-up, a US Vogue cover just released and possibly the best sense of humour in the music industry, we are totally and utterly in love with the British beauty and her style.
